Frequently Asked Questions

If you have any questions about our Chicago Cake and Cookie Decorating Workshops, check out this list of Frequently Asked Questions. If you don't find the answer below, feel free to contact us!

All tickets are final sale, non-refundable, and non-transferable to another date. If you're unable to attend, you're welcome to transfer or gift the ticket to a friend.

Can you add another seat to class?
No. Once the workshop is sold out, we will not be able to accommodate for additional participants. Our space is cozy and we like to keep the workshops small and intimate and so everyone can have the best experience possible.

Can I work on the same cake as someone else?
No. Everyone attending must buy a ticket, and everyone works on their own cakes.

Can I bring someone else to the workshop?
Everyone attending a workshop must have a ticket. Workshops are small, only 14 people, and the studio is cozy. It is our goal to create an environment that feels comfy, creative, and relaxed, so there is no room for any extra bodies!

Gluten Intolerance:
We can accommodate gluten intolerances by providing you with a gluten-friendly* cake. Anyone with a serious gluten allergy or Celiacs should be advised that there is gluten everywhere in our kitchen.

Cakes, cookies, and donuts are all nut free
. We use imitation almond extract in many of our recipes, including cakes, buttercream, cookies, and royal icing. It contains zero actual almond and is completely safe for people with nut allergies to consume.

HOWEVER: there are nuts in our kitchen, and nuts in many of our snacks. We will always indicate which snacks have nuts in them, but cannot provide any nut-free alternatives.

Dairy & Egg:
We are not able to accommodate dairy allergies or egg allergies.

All of our in-person workshops are for adults (18+) only. Workshops are set in an adult environment and built for adult attention spans.

If you're looking for something kid friendly, we offer an all-ages opportunity for cookie decorating in your home or at your event. Check out Offsite Events to learn more!

Sadly, we cannot. Eggs and butter are an integral part of our buttercream, cookie and cake recipes and we can't substitute them.

We'll box it up for you nice and snug so that it travels safely home in your car, Uber or train!

There is paid parking outside of our studio on Spaulding Ave, as well as long our cross-street, Lawrence Ave.

Beginner 1:
You’ve never held a piping bag before but you love watching cake vids online and are curious to learn more!

Beginner 2:
You’ve taken a class or two at Bon Vivant and occasionally bake off a cake at home. You know what a crumb coat is.

You’re the go-to cake maker in your family- you’ve got a few cake tools at home and you use them! You’re handy with an offset and decent with a piping bag. You’d never dream of skipping the crumb coat.

You’re a cake decorator. Like, for real. You’re always playing around in the kitchen with new techniques and pushing yourself to learn new things. You can stack a cake like a pro and use your scraper with confidence!

Nope! Bon Vivant is now 100% workshops! While we aren’t taking orders any longer, there are tons of talented bakers in Chicago who will take great care of you.

Some of my faves are: ECBG Cake Studio, Flourish, Delabhe Studios, Love Sugar and Grace, Alliance Bakery, Kelly Dull, Lil's Cakes, Sugar Moon, Half Birthday, Broken Tart, and Mindful Baking.

A typical snack spread includes a foccacia, a whipped cheese spread (contains nuts), the Best Kale Salad Ever, and a trifle.

If you're gluten free, we'll have some gluten free crackers to go along with the dip, plus a GF treat for you. We'll also have a complimentary cocktail or mocktail waiting for you.

Please note that we cannot accommodate nut allergies in the complimentary snacks.
